The HF bands are alive and well with aviation related communications. Within the last week, from my location in Edmonton, I have received aviation comms from New Zealand, Tokyo, San Francisco, Gander, New York, Ireland and England. These were primarily civilian aeronautical channels, but several were military broadcasts.

This Episode gives details on what kind of communications can be heard on the HF bands (3-30 MHz) and provides information on where to tune your SDR or shortwave radio to find them.

Monitoring these long range communications is a fascinating thing to do. It is amazing how many miles these signals travel, and often you will hear both sides of the conversations – aircraft and ground stations.
