For this experiment, I matched up the $25 RTL-SDR v3 dongle with my recently acquired AirSpy YouLoop antenna.

The YouLoop officially requires a high sensitivity receiver. When the RTL-SDR v3 is used in HF mode, it will receive plenty of signals, but you wouldn’t really call it a particularly sensitive receiver in this area of the band (it has excellent sensitivity in VHF, UHF and satellite frequencies).

Honestly, I didn’t think there would be any results using this combination of hardware. I ended up getting a surprise!

Now would this be a set up I would recommend for DXing? No. The YouLoop works best with something like an AirSpy HF+ Discovery SDR. In fact I made several other videos with the YouLoop paired to the HF+ Discovery which you may be interested in.
